The base really shouldn't be lower. Top ICs can absolutely make more money than management, but this is stupid.

I like management as I get fulfillment out of helping people grow, coaching, etc. All that stuff is fun and rewarding. It's also nice when other people make you money. BUT you lose control, so it's a double edged sword.

yeahhh idk how that makes sense. id like to think that if you were to apply they would adjust comp.

no one would take on more responsibility for less money right!?

Then again most people dont get into management because they think they will make MORE then they will as an IC. But to take a lower base? seems stupid.

They're probably hoping for an outside hire so they can underpay and hope this person never finds out what the AE's are making.
In no world should a manager be making less than their reps.

In base a manager should make more - everywhere I have ever been good reps make more their manager, ceiling should always be higher for an IC

The right management comp does not have a lower base. It should pay more for showing up and doing the daily things. The variable part is the trade. I know Iโ€™m not gonna make what SuperRep makes, but usually there are just a few if any of those.

On the other hand, first time front line managers are usually worthless.

Comp is wrong internally imo.
But for a variety of reasons, some people like to lead, some do better in that role, some want to continue the path up the ladder for their own skillset or for their own organization eventually.

Iโ€™d only go for a management position if the base jumps at least 50% and i get some share options.

That sounds crazy, when I was a manager in the beer industry you had a company car, Amex, a budget to spend in the market and all the beer you could drink, which compensated for the shit you had to put up with. I wouldn't change for the world. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜…

I'm surprised the base is lower, makes sense that total comp ceiling is lower then top performer ICs due to higher commission margins for the rep.

In my opinion, going into leadership offers more stability with higher base (usually) and higher long-term earning potential as you work your way up the ladder towards VP/CRO level.

My companies old CRO retired with generational wealth after our IPO, I can promise you that no ICs have ever had an equity plan that could result in a sunset cruise like that.
