Has anyone transitioned from sales role to deal desk role?

Hi savages,

I wonder if anyone here has any experience from working in a deal desk role or transitioning into a deal desk role? I am curious as few of my colleagues have made the jump from sales to deal desk and to me it seems like a way to potentially future proof myself.

Is it easy, does it pay more, advantages, disadvantages?

(aka I sometimes dream of other roles but always remain in sales lol)

Thanks!

Pay is less, the reason people make the move is to not have the stress of a number over their head

Ah makes sense. I think my old colleagues have a really high base but obviously there's no commission

I was equally or more stressed as the Head of RevOps. If we were missing our number it was my teams job to figure out why.

Ok, pirate, I'm just gonna say it. You're a sword wielding, nordic in Ireland who speaks 3 languages fluently. Your wit is sharp, and your process is sharper. If I were running your crew, there is no way I'd take you out of a sales role. I don't even know you, but I know this much.

I moved from Sales Leader to RevOps Leader. Same work to be done but from a different angle.

So PBS you say it was your task to figure out why numbers were missed as RevOps leader...but as much as sales leader or what do you mean by this?

RevOps is the enablement and illumination arm of sales. Building territories. Building dashboards. Analyzing rep and business performance. Identifying gaps in the motion that are causing bad or incomplete data. All of this is on the RevOps team to get done when the sales leader asks for more information.

Deal Desk is a function of RevOps. You’re pushing back on reps when they incorrectly quote or package. That’s a tiny fraction of the RevOps world.

The best deal desk folks I worked with are former sales reps. I knew a couple. They’d moved on for different reasons - life changes dictating a move from the field, to stepping back from the stress. It’s a valuable and valued role. As has been said, it doesn’t pay as much, but can be very rewarding for those who enjoy that end of the sales cycle.

Do you really think they'd pay deal desk more than the people selling?

Base yes commission no. If you hit all the time it's better to be in sales. I didn't get to my yearly target last year but very confident on this year. Just curious

I think I am too stressed out and it is taking an effect on my health. Maybe it is the org and I need to just try somewhere else.
