Is holding REN commissions normal?

I've run into a huge issue and not sure if I'm being lied to or if this is normal in the SaaS/Tech Sales world.

I recently pulled in a renewal that wasn't due until next March (23') with an expansion (and a brand new start date of Aug 1st on a 2 year deal). I'm being paid on commission for all of the new ACV but my company is saying they won't pay out the commission for the REN portion (holding my commission for 7 months).

This being said, I'm missing out on 18k in pay until next March. To add to this, I'm finding out that it may not be 18k since they will most likely be cutting the percent payout on renewals on next years comp plans so they don't have to pay me that full amount. Based on what I've heard around the company I'll be paid out 1/3 of what I should be once that renewal percentage changes from my current 12% to somewhere around 4%.

Thoughts on if this is industry standard and how someone would handle this?

If the sale is made today it should have todays compensation rules applied to it. Non negotiable. Read your comp plan and be ready to battle.

When do they pay for the renewal? A lot of companies only pay out on a signed deal when the client has paid.

This is what I'm wondering as well, though it sounds like some early renewal/payment elements are part of this deal.

We definitely need more info here.

Also seems like there are some weird elements when it comes to the commission percentage..

They payout the renewal portion of the deal (not additional net new ACV/expansion) when the end of contract is set to expire (i.e. in this situation March 23’). So I get paid on all new new ACV of deal but the 18k from the renewal portion won’t be paid till March of 23’ and my percent payout that is currently at 12% will most likely change to around 1-2%. All depends on whatever they want to change my renewal payout rate to. And remember, we aren’t allowed to negotiate comp plans so whatever they decide on I’ll have to agree to in order to get paid (whatever the lower percentage they decide on).

So even though we have a new start/end date, since our accounting team doesn’t account for paying out the renewal till the current contract end date, they don’t pay out the renewal portion till then no matter what.

I found the clause in our 28 page comp plan on page 21.

If you make the sale now, why would your future commission payout not be cemented at 18k in March if it's being contracted?
The sale is being made NOW, so why is your comp on it variable to change in the future?

The reason they are saying the comp would be different is that the renewal portion of the sale wouldn’t come through till 23’ at which point the renewal payout percentage will 100% go down from 12%

yeah this sounds rally shitty. does the company have a policy in place that says they will not pay on early renewals? if so, that sucks, but you should always know your comp plan.

if I was the company i would be thrilled by your work and especially a new 2 year agreement.

Sounds like a terrible comp plan to me

FEELINGS- Your commission is annual (ARR) but the customer paid monthly (MRR) and if there is a churn in the next few months, the company will deduct by increasing your quota and taking the equivalent amount $$ from your quota in the next month.
