Let go before I could get going

hi guys I was previously working at a startup and was let go - the company hired me at the beginning of January and let me go before the end of my three month probation and my boss never really gave me a reason I've asked for feedback via email as well but was ignored what should I do going forward?!

a 3 month probation??? so like a trial run with an employee??? that sounds insane. I am very sorry to hear you got let go that is always hard.

honestly you need to forget about that company and move on.

If companies ask you about this going forward I would mention the lack of feedback and how you tried to learn more. Also how you are lookign for a company that is going to commit to you like you are committing to the company.

they will like that

Yeah the probation period is typical in the UK it also means that employers don’t need an actual reason to fire you (you could legally be let go if they didn’t like your shoes during the probation)

Thank you for the advice I’ll definitely take that approach!

I agree with Tennisand sales. Sorry you got let go, that sucks.

But the sooner you forget about them and move on the better. Use your daily activity and how you were starting to hit your targets (highlight your achievements) for your next interview.

The probation is quite standard in start-ups as well!

Here in the US, it’s mostly “at will” employment so they can fire you at any time and for any/no reason.
They may not want to provide you feedback for legal reasons. It might open them up to something. I’d just move and not beat yourself up over it.

@climberofladders So I was in a similar situation to what you were in, except I was there for 5 months instead of 3, here's some background: I just jumped from my last employer of 3 years and I badly wanted out of the Copier sales game. I was able to land a Sale Director role in what would amount to a start up. I was over my head but I had a pay raise, a sweet office, and a 4 minute commute, so I was confident I could get shit done anyhow.

I did the job, ALL OF IT. I was marketing, I was sales, I was customer service, and logistics. I set meetings, I posted on all the platforms, I CLOSED DEALS. 3 months in, the owner brings in an old buddy to help with strategy. Sweet I think, I'll take all the help I can get. 2 months go by doing strategy sessions with this guy and it was basically just a Sandler course para phrased. Still business as usual.

One Monday on my way to the office I keep getting notice that my credentials for outlook are wrong and then I get notice that I am no longer admin for all the company social pages...I call the owner and I'm like WTF is going on? I'm out, that's what going on - thats when I found out that his plan the whole time was to hire his buddy, the sandler dude, who had to wait out his current gigs. He also said the company was just too small as if that explained anything to me about why I wasn't good enough for the job.

The shit sucks, it stings, and it will make you question yourself in everyway. The only thing you can do is look forward. Find places hiring sales savages and be persistent. Follow up and hound them and let them know you don't take your money and your career lightly. I found myself a great opp with a great company. Sure I could have done without the random Monday morning firing but I wouldn't change much now that I am at a place and in a role I am happy with and meets my needs.

Way more than you needed but it hit a chord and this was bottled up. Go get your next gig, kick it's ass and wear this chip on your shoulder until it looks like the golden spaulders a champion gladiator would wear while his enemies flee in terror.

Sounds like they decided to not extend your employment for company reasons. If you were doing a poor job you would have been told that during your one on ones I would think. 🤔

Assuming there were one on ones.   OP?  Did you have meetings with your supervisor where your performance would have come up?

If it can be of any help @climberofladders, you'll probably look back in a year time and think "thank god I got out of there". Not providing any feedback in the first 3 months or when being let go is a HUGE red flag. Shitty boss or shitty organization as a whole.

I'm sure you'll land on your feet. In your next jobs, it could be important to set your own feedback rhythm with colleagues / manager (especially in the first few months - when it's most critical).

Keep it up champ!!!

I’ve seen it in the US a few times. It is generally (1) to weed out people that they think lied on the resume, (2) to ensure that you are going to actually work and not just do nothing or be really bad, or (3) that they overtired and plan to cut someone. With most jobs, it’s 1 or 2 since they have been burned in the past.

I understand but, I was starting to hit target when they let me go which is why I’m confused- it was my first sales role also so there were no lies on my cv

Where you hitting quota? Activity metrics?

I was starting to but we didn’t really have a set quota for the first 3 months as I was new to sales the idea was that I use the first 3 months to get comfortable with outreach and closing prospects

Yeah thats probably what went wrong- quota is usually 0- 66%-100% first three months. So if they saw you werent ramping fast enough and didn’t like your outreach/were hard to work with/had too many problems, that could be a reason you were let go

That is strange. Did they set you up for success in any way? It's generally costly for companies to deal with employee churn.
Might have dodged a bullet if they are this apathetic.
