Managers/President Able to Read Chats?

This is weird and oddly personal, sorry.
My work uses Google Hangouts (like an instant messaging platform if you aren't familiar) for messaging instead of Slack or something else that makes more sense.

Over the weekend I had some pretty serious family issues that I frankly didn't want to talk about come Monday morning at the office.

Our President walks up to me, and asks how my weekend was. I said, "it was interesting but overall good". then he asked, "is everything okay? how is your dad? I get a sense you care a whole lot about him and I want to make sure everything is okay". *jaw drop*

Long story short my dad had to go to the ER (yes, he's okay). The kicker is I TOLD ONE GIRL FRIDAY OVER MESSENGER that I had to leave early to go help my dad...

Is the president a mind reader, or did he somehow read my personal chat with my coworker?

Always assume your internal chats are being monitored. Don't say anything on a company chat that you wouldn't want anyone else at the company to know about.

Exactly. It's rare for people to actually read your chats because most people have better shit to do but they most def have the capability. I use texting for anything I wouldn't want the company to know about.

100% most of my conversations with coworkers are done via text. The ones I'm cool with anyways

For sure, and I get that... I guess I am a little shook that he even asked as that was super personal. Should I assume he read my chats and he's not a mind reader? Because there is literally no way he guessed that.

He likely read them. Would be too big of a coincidence if he didn't.

Good to know. I guess I didn’t really know that was a thing!

Everything done on company platforms is usually recorded, most people don't them because of time, but some folks in my company have been fired over inappropriate un work related topics they were discussing with coworkers.

I assume all company communication systems are being monitored.  It's a strategy that has never hurt me in my career.

Right, and that makes sense, but I wasn't talking about anything inappropriate so I'm just kinda taken aback

I'd imagine this is more likely contributed to the water cooler rather than company monitoring but who knows...

I think you should highlight this, they shouldn't be imposing on your personal life. 100% something to address.

That truthfully is what I am most concerned about... If you knew something was going on, why bring it up to me first thing on a Monday morning? It's done and over with now, but like, come on.

We were talking about this right after the Netflix story broke. ALL of these things can be watched. They can also install monitoring software without telling you.

Yes. Anything that happens on company equipment or systems is or can be monitored at any time.

Also, your friend could have said something to your boss too.

maybe he asked her why you left? Or she mentioned it in passing?
Or if it is a company provided chat service, it probably is monitored.

He wasn’t in on Friday. I left at like 4:30pm and everyone was gone basically. It’s via gmail so it’s not like a 3rd party deal

Assume they can read the messages. On the other hand your colleague maybe mentioned it.

this because maybe he asked where your were or something.

We try and stick it out, but there is 0% chance that I actually work during that timeframe. I always have some anxiety that my manager is going to call my desk phone to see if I'm still there
