scripts killing me

I've been at my company for almost 3 years now - I'll have one year of AE experience under my belt this summer. Been up and down (as the first year often is, I'm told) - one thing I'm struggling with is the absolute indisputable mandate that we all (BDRs included) follow a word for word script on every single call we have. I find it super robotic and honestly a huge turnoff for the prospect. I get the benefit of having one available, but I feel like we are being scripted to death and there's no way out. I know the script vs no script thing is the tale as old as time, but whenever I bring it up to management, they act like I'm insane and some crazy lone wolf for not liking scripts. Am I going crazy here, or are we shooting ourself in the foot like I think we are?

I'm a big fan of scripts in general having cut my teeth in Telemarketing. And there's good reason for them. The primary one being - they work!

That said, I don't believe you should robotically follow one. Its there for guidance and to keep you on message. You need to be able to pivot when needed though.

In the end though, you need to follow your management's guidance here. Its the golden rule - he who has the gold makes the the rules. And do what the top performers do as well.

I can understand scripts for people totally new to sales. But if you're 3 years in, I'm sure you've probably literally said that same script in your sleep and can afford to fit some personality into your pitch.
However, if management is 100% against it, I'd probably just smile and dial, UNLESS you have some game-changing pitch that is seeing 2x the amount of meetings/sales booked. If that somehow is the case, show them metrics and let them know what changes you'd like to see.

I feel the pain - I hate scripts. I build it all into organic conversation pieces but the job is the job until you find somewhere else.

They are great for talking points, but not reading word for word.

hard to say if you are shooting yourself in the foot. But from the companies perspective i get it. Especially if they are big.

They are trying to control as much as possible to know what works and what doesnt work. and they loose clarity on that if everyone says something different.

One suggestion is that if you "go off script" and it works, let your boss know. "hey just as a heads up ive used this line a few times and this is the response, do you think others would find that helpful?"

if its legit your boss will steal it, send it up the chain and get all the credit.....but at least you might be ablt to keep using the line
