Would you consider doing this?

Just an idea that popped into my head that is a possible option at my company in the near future.

We are currently growing the company and bringing on more and more AE to the office and looking to create an internal cold calling team. The potential is to become the manager or director for this new team but would leave my current position as an AE but would come with a higher base.

Would you leave being an AE for a higher base and to manage a new team in your company?

Moving to an SDR manager role puts a lid on your career pretty quickly.

If you are going to be managing people that are closing then this can be a good first step if you want to be in leadership long term, if not, Id keep doing what you are doing.

This is coming from someone thats been in management/director roles for the last 6 years.

I am one of those. Leading an Internal Cold Calling Team.
I'd suggest you stay an IC, unless you have a REAL interest in managing people. More often than not, the juice isn't worth the squeeze.

I'd prefer to be an AE than an SDR manager

It all totally depends on what you prefer.  I would personally never want to be anything other than an IC, but if your goal is to lead a team, then follow that path.

I'd stick to being an AE, I feel that it has more long term evolution possibility

Oh look a fellow dude! Neat.

Do you have a desire to lead? If so, yes. Have you ever lead before? Very different then being an IC.

Totally up to you and what floats your boat.

I'd rather manage closers

Managing a bunch of whiny, soon-to-churn, not-out-of-college-yet sales newbs as they learn to cold call and deal with real rejection for the first time in their pathetic lives??  Nah.

I would only do that if I was interested in being a manager and helping other people close deals and make more money than you.

if you dont want to lead ppl and just want a higher base, dont do it.

Yeah I agree with most here. AE is the better path unless you’re truly passionate about managing a team. The experience would be great but again may limit your career path but at least you already have closing experience so it might not be that bad! Follow your heart 😻
