I f**cked it in the last 5 mins of the interview.

Hello Savages.

So I had an interview today, and well the last part was a role-play, and for whatever reason, I fucked it, and fucked it hard, right after overcoming an objection and then moving on to maybe having some rapport, I said "... so since I'm not reaching out to the person that makes the decision...", WTF! hahahaha. For the life of me, I've never said this in a sales call, but I did. everything else was fine, like how does a graduated artist go for a sales role? Well, the economic situation in my country kinda called me to do a different career path, I think most of us would agree that money talks and our dreams can be worked on the side. Goddamn it.

So with that being said, how do you guys overcome social anxiety? I think what made it worse for me is the first time I jump onto an interview and there are 4 mfs joining all watching me like a circus clown in a zoom meeting.

Sorry for all the cursing, I'm a little hard on myself at times.

Totally agree w/ @paddy- I, personally, would take it as a bigger red flag if your role play had you with an influencer or champion and you didn't ask about the DM. It's less about how 'smooth' you are and more about how aware you are of what it takes to get to closed/won.

I do not role play before interview. I typically will do research on the product, market saturation/competitors, and on the people interviewing me.ย

if you made it that far means you're awesome. And sometimes you just need to take a deep breath and focus on the question. You can also build rapport by ack the elephant in the room: saying something like: hey I think I can do much better considering I could have defused the objection better... there you're demonstrating you're coachable and self aware

Donโ€™t worry about how YOU think you did. Ask them - is that the feedback they gave you or is this you just getting into your head. I always ask after role plays for feedback and if they are concerned about my abilities to meet the qualifications of the job based off my role play. If they didnโ€™t say anything - get out of your head! Note it as something that felt weird for you to say and just donโ€™t say it again. We all have our own phrases and those we hate when we catch ourselves saying them.

Then it gives you the opportunity to say - โ€œIโ€™ve literally never said that, just had a brain spasm and laugh about itโ€ or tell them what would have been better to say, like in a actual call coaching. Best of luck; hope you get it!!

It's so true, I def will put that into my interview routine from now on.

And by the way, I didn't get it I know some people that applied with me and they already have gotten the contract offer. It's a bummer but life goes on and I'll be more ready for the next one!

For sure! Saves you the time too if they give you a generic - we went with someone else - email.. you already know their feedback and can implement. Was there for the last couple months too with interviews. Just landed my dream role last week. Itโ€™ll come!!!

Hey @NoSuperheroย couple of things - you did well and feel proud of it. Don't assume anything, they might have liked it who knows. If someone not in decision making capacity is not, right? Nothing wrong.

If people staring you makes you uncomfortable, next time you can ask them if you can switch off your video. Atleast they won't find you being nervous unless you sound.ย

All the best and I'm sure you have got it already ๐Ÿ˜‰

I doubt that one little thing submarined your whole interview. Could you have phrased it better, sure, but thatโ€™s an easy correction and itโ€™s a role play after all and they know that. The fact you are aware of it, is the most important thing.

I appreciate the feedback, I think the whole mock call I seemed insecure, and to think of it all of them kept their cameras on and well that seems a little deliberate on a mock call to have them on, it felt odd and it's always felt that way so I usually turn my camera off, since they didn't I didn't so that may have played a part in my insecurity, and to think of it I can perfectly ask to have them turn the camera off during the mock call.

I think you did alright, and I'm finding that being real instead of trying to people please and just always say the right thing has less of a positive impact. Speaking the truth and just being totally real is respected, even if it's not the perfect statement. Don't wrack your brain for the right thing to say, if you've got the knowledge and experience what you say is the right thing. If they don't like it,ย  then 50,000 companies are hiring sales people right now, find the person who appreciates your realness

Very true, I let them get in my head, and now that I think of it during the whole mock call I remember stuttering and seeming nervous. So, I gotta be a lot more ready and I can ask to have the camera off during the mock call, that would def help.

1 -An interview is another sales conversation, only you happen to be selling yourself.
2 - Detach from the outcome. As in any other sales conversation you don't want to appear needy.
3 - Remember that you are also interviewing THEM, unless you don't care about what kind of company you work for.... you should have several questions prepared for each interview you do, and some more may materialise based on things they say to you.

Thanks for the advice @TheHypnotist! I'm taking a lot of notes for the processes ahead of me, I've been getting jobs left and right because of good English, and well I've hit a new level of competition where I really have to try in interviews and handle it like a sales call I normally do everyday.

Your 3rd point is key to getting your ego up and facing fear head-on, Love it! Also, it's KEY being prepared.

Hahaha this is brilliant! Great comment. If this is a good hiring manager- theyโ€™ll respect the swag, your observation (which is accurate) and see the good in it.
if they donโ€™t- they have too much ego, and you probably donโ€™t wanna work with them anyway.
good for you and good luck

If you get it you get it, if not then onto the next one! We've all had bad interviews. All you can do is enjoy the day in front of you. But honestly - fuck role play on an interview. I did this once and it was for my 1st SaaS role.ย

Social anxiety is tough to cope with.ย  Honestly, the best way to deal with it is throw yourself into the uncomfortable positions.ย  Don't like interviewing?ย  Schedule 10.ย  Hate public speaking.ย  Agree to give presentations.ย  Over time, you'll become more comfortable.ย ย

They also say cold showers/ice baths help...
