my boss costing us money

ok i cant believe how many stories i have about this deal with my boss.

I reference the post above because the meeting Im talking about here is what happened after that situation.

So we are having a pricing call with the DM of the largest account in my book/territory.

We have mentioned high level figures to the DM before, but now we are talking about their exact volume and integrations to give her a total cost.

We start talking about integrations and I talk through the main points to consider and the capabilities we do and dont have.

Then my boss slack's me "i think we should give this to them for free".........

BACK STORY:

  • our integration cost has gone up 5x due to new agreement with a partner.
  • this integration is needed and they want it and are open to pay for it.
  • we are $2MM less expensive than the competition and we know they have the money.

So we should 100% BE CHARGING FOR THIS.

before i could type back "no i think thats a bad idea"

He pipes up and tells her we will give it to her for free.......that was AT LEAST $50K I just lost.

what.the.fuckkkkkkkk.

When we talked about it afterward, he told me he did it because he didnt want there to be any problems like another deal we are working on.

After I explained how completely different that situation is, and how by offering a discount we are NOT solving any problems he says "yeah thats a good point"

im losing my mind with this fucking guy.

oh and he is taking this whole week off and did not tell anyone. so, awesome.

ok rant over. thanks for listening.

I guess he is sort of a bit scared of losing the business without even know the background, competitors costing etc.

Red flag for me for someone in that position to expect the worst without talking.

@TennisandSalesIt sounds like you will need to be very specific in giving them an update before the call.

he was scared about the integration conversation. which he shouldn't be. another reason why i needed him to talk to me before we did this. but thats another issue hahah

Its the kind of scared of losing the business that ends up you losing the business because the customer can sense you are scared and its a red flag for them.

Clearly has very limited selling experience.

GREAT point! and that was one of my main problems that i told him about. we need to have our process down. we cant let it look like we dont know how to talk about pricing our how our solution works. when we mess this up, it causes doubt in the prospect.

WOW. That would have been $50k in commission you just lost on that or $50k in Revenue?

That is complete crap on that man. I am sorry for your situation.

$50k in revenue.

its total crap. he gives out the integration for free or at a discount all the time. this would be the PERFECT opportunity to recoup that, and the prospect wouldnt have batted an eye.

hahah! you know it SUCH a weird thing. he is a SUPER nice guy, and has had some incredible success in his career.

But there are many times where i feel like he lacks basic skills to be good at his job especially at the seniority that he has (being in the C-suite)

Maybe he's getting a tad old for the game... losing some fiery instinct?

Could be. But i think itโ€™s that he has gotten lucky, made the right connections and got him self into a Role that he isnโ€™t truly experienced enough to have.

Is there something going on behind the scenes? Like is this manager under a ton of pressure to perform, at least more than a normal Q4?

Seems like this manager is discounting a lot to get quick wins.

this is a great question. i know he is under REAL pressure for the first time in a long time. But i think the biggest problem is he views cost as the way to solve all problems and its just not the case.

Yeah, that's a boss trying to take over a deal where they have no place to, which is a massive red flag.

Your boss seems to subscribe to the "discount to get the biz" philosophy aka laying cards out on the table that should not be. Nonsensical to do that and possibly worth bringing to someone higher in the org.
