Where's the break point?

Ok pro's I need your advice. I hold back from being too 'forward' on the phone, in order to not pi** my prospect off. For example, I hesitate in asking for too many contact details or hesitate to follow prospects up occasionally.

Here's the question. Is that freaking stupid, or is 'gently gently catch a monkey' a good tact??

Asking for contact details and following up are two of the most basic sales processes of all time...if you're not doing these things on the regular you're not going to get very far.

If you're calling a prospect several times a day all week, ignoring their objections, or trying to force a conversation when there are good reasons as to why it's not appropriate that's being pushy.  Neither of the things you described above would count as being pushy except by the craziest of prospects who will never sign with you anyway, you're just doing your job.

Thanks yes I get that I have to do it, just don't want to go too hard and make it worthless...

There are truly pushy salespeople out there who piss people off...they are not the people who simply ask for contact info and follow up. Don't worry about it.

You are not bothering prospects. You're attempting to see if you can save them time/money or improve their business with your product/service. Even if it's not the right fit you can't be blamed for simply trying to help.

Sometimes you'll need to piss your prospects off (to some degree) if you want to close deals / schedule meetings.

The best piece of advice I was given as a young BDR was to 'Become Comfortable with Being Uncomfortable' which includes things like asking for too many contact details or being diligent in your follow up efforts.

As a person in sales there’s a right way to do this and a wrong way. Right way is to go about it in a professional manner with a common goal of providing them value. If you can demonstrate that people have no problem giving you access

Have you lost prospects from being too pushy, or are you just afraid to? I'm wondering what your definition of "piss off" is because there's a level of persistence required in order to succeed in this game.

Ask what you need. If they are annoyed tell them why you need it. We re talking to get the job done and create a win-win situation.

How many times will you call a prospect after they don't answer the first time? At what frequency? I typically don't make a lot of repeat calls, just call with volume consistently and try to catch folks at the right time...
